WIMA ASIA AND WIMAPHIL CHAMPION GENDER EQUALITY AT THE 2026 WOMEN IN MARITIME FORUM
When women rise, industries transform, communities thrive, and the future sails forward with hope. Recognizing the powerful role of education and collaboration in transforming the maritime industry, Women in Maritime Asia (WIMA Asia) and Women in Maritime Philippines (WIMAPHIL), in partnership with the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA), successfully celebrated the 2026 International Day for Women in Maritime Forum on 18 May 2026 at the Manila Prince Hotel.
Carrying the theme “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence” and sub-theme “Voices of Resilient Women in Maritime in the Face of Global Uncertainty,” the forum gathered maritime leaders, women professionals, educators, cadets, maritime institutions, and industry stakeholders in a collective effort to strengthen gender equality and inclusive leadership within the maritime sector.
The event was honored by the presence of distinguished maritime and national leaders, including Administrator Sonia Malaluan of the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA); Chairperson Ermelita Valdeavilla of the Philippine Commission for Women (PCW); and Ms. Rhodora Azanza, National Scientist and former President of the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST). Their messages and participation strongly reinforced the importance of women empowerment, resilience, gender-responsive policies, and inclusive leadership in advancing a progressive and sustainable maritime industry.
One of the forum’s key highlights was the strong connection established between maritime organizations and academic institutions. WIMA Asia and WIMAPHIL emphasized that empowering women in maritime must begin through education, mentorship, and exposure to leadership opportunities for future maritime professionals. By engaging maritime schools and training institutions such as the MARINERS’ Legazpi early on in their careers, the organization continues to bridge the gap between academic preparation and industry realities.
The event featured insightful discussions on gender mainstreaming, workplace inclusivity, policy implementation, and women’s leadership in maritime. Distinguished speakers and industry leaders shared their personal journeys and professional experiences.
The solidarity message from the members of the WIMA Asia Governing Council reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to regional cooperation and mentorship among women maritime professionals across Asia. Equally inspiring was the Women Leaders Panel moderated by Ms. Merle Jimenez-San Pedro, President of WIMA Asia/WIMA Phil, where accomplished women leaders from shipping, fisheries, manning, and maritime administration shared stories of perseverance, leadership, and resilience.
In her message during the forum, Ms. San Pedro emphasized that “WIMAPHIL remains committed to transforming policies into meaningful actions that empower women both at sea and ashore. Through advocacy, mentorship, and collaboration with MARINA, maritime organizations, and the academe, we continue to champion safe spaces, equal opportunities, and professional growth for women in maritime.” She further highlighted that “WIMA Asia stands united with maritime stakeholders across the region in advancing gender equality and strengthening the role of women in the maritime industry through leadership development, education, mentorship, and regional cooperation.”
For WIMA Asia and WIMAPHIL, the participation and involvement of maritime educational institutions remain essential in sustaining long-term progress in gender equality. The organization recognizes that future maritime leaders are first shaped inside classrooms, simulators, and training centers where values of professionalism, respect, and inclusivity are nurtured. Through continuous collaboration with the academe, WIMA Asia and WIMAPHIL aim to inspire more women to pursue maritime careers and encourage future mariners to become advocates of safe and equitable maritime spaces.
The forum also served as an avenue to launch stronger advocacy initiatives and welcome new WIMAPHIL members who share the organization’s mission of empowering women and promoting diversity in the maritime sector. Stories of women overcoming adversities in shipboard and shore-based careers further strengthened the event’s message of courage, resilience, and unity amid global uncertainty.
As WIMA Asia and WIMAPHIL continue to champion women’s participation and leadership in maritime, the success of the 2026 International Day for Women in Maritime Forum reflects the growing partnership among government agencies, maritime organizations, and educational institutions in creating a more inclusive and progressive maritime industry.
Together with maritime schools like MPCF-LC, WIMA Asia and WIMAPHIL remain committed to developing future maritime professionals who will not only excel in their chosen careers but will also uphold the values of equality, respect, resilience, and service in the global maritime community.
