CINEBABAYLAN 2026: WIMA Asia Champions Safer, Inclusive, and Empowered Maritime Communities
“When stories are seen and voices are heard, change begins to take shape.”
This powerful message came to life during CineBabaylan 2026, a meaningful and action-driven initiative held in celebration of National Women’s Month at Mariners’ Polytechnic Colleges Foundation – Legazpi City (MPCF-LC). In alignment with the mission and vision of WIMA Asia, the event reinforced its commitment to advancing gender equality, promoting safe spaces, and empowering women across the maritime sector.
With the theme “Anchored in Respect: Building Safe, Inclusive, and VAWC-Free Maritime Communities,” the activity served as a dynamic platform that combined awareness, reflection, and creative engagement. It highlighted the importance of creating safe environments, both in academic institutions and in the maritime workplace, where dignity, respect, and inclusivity are upheld.
Rooted in cultural heritage, the initiative drew inspiration from the Babaylan, a revered symbol of women’s leadership, strength, and influence in pre-colonial Philippine society. By connecting this historical perspective to present-day realities, CineBabaylan 2026 reinforced the vital role of women in shaping a progressive and equitable maritime industry, not only in the Philippines but across Asia.
A key highlight of the program was a thought-provoking film screening that brought to light real-life experiences and challenges faced by women, particularly in relation to gender-based violence and discrimination. This was followed by a reflective and engaging discussion led by Ms. Merle Jimenez-San Pedro, President of MPCF-LC and President of WIMA Asia/Philippines. The dialogue encouraged participants to examine issues of gender sensitivity, social awareness, and their individual and collective roles in creating change within their spheres of influence.
In line with MPCF-LC’s holistic approach, the program transitioned into an interactive creative segment titled “Painting the Reflection.” This activity provided participants with an opportunity to translate their insights and emotions into visual expression. Through art, students were able to communicate powerful messages of respect, resilience, and solidarity.
The program concluded with an inspiring message from GAD Focal Person Engr. Jan Cohlen Bernal, who emphasized the strength and resilience of women in navigating both personal and professional challenges within the maritime domain. She highlighted the importance of collective responsibility, allyship, and sustained advocacy in building communities that are not only inclusive but also safe and empowering for all.
In her closing message, Ms. San Pedro reaffirmed the deeper purpose of the initiative:
“ CineBabaylan 2026 is more than just creative expression, it is a reflection of our mission to cultivate individuals who are not only skilled in their profession but are also grounded in respect, empathy, and social responsibility. By creating spaces for dialogue and expression, we empower our students to become agents of change in building a safer and more inclusive maritime community ”
The success of CineBabaylan 2026 was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the Office of Research, Extension, and Services (ORES), WIMA, and various student and partner organizations. This collective endeavor reflects the growing movement within the maritime sector to champion gender equality.
As WIMA Asia continues to expand its reach and strengthen its advocacy across the region, initiatives like CineBabaylan serve as powerful reminders that change begins with awareness, and is sustained through action, collaboration, and shared commitment.
Together, we move forward, anchored in respect, driven by purpose, and united in building safer and more inclusive maritime communities for all.
