WIMA Asia Supports Women’s Month Initiatives Promoting Empowerment and Safe Maritime Communities
In celebration of International Women’s Day and the observance of National Women’s Month in the Philippines, Women in Maritime Association (WIMA) Asia continues to support initiatives that advance women’s empowerment, leadership, and safety within the maritime sector.
Among the organizations actively promoting these values is the Mariners’ Polytechnic Colleges Foundation – Legazpi City (MPCF-LC), a maritime education institution committed to strengthening the participation of women in the maritime industry. The institution recently launched its 2026 Women’s Month celebration through “Babaye Fest,” a community-centered event that brought together students, maritime educators, and gender advocates.
The event featured wellness activities, leadership discussions, and advocacy programs designed to highlight the contributions of women in maritime and to encourage more young women to pursue maritime careers. One of the key highlights of the celebration was the launch of the “No to Sexual Abuse and Sexual Harassment” advocacy drive, reinforcing the importance of creating safe and respectful environments in maritime education and workplaces.
In a message of support, Merle Jimenez-San Pedro, President of Women in Maritime Association (WIMA) Asia and Women in Maritime Association of the Philippines, emphasized the growing role of women in shaping the maritime industry across the region.
“Across Asia and the Philippines, women are increasingly making meaningful contributions to maritime leadership, operations, and innovation. Through WIMA Asia and WIMA Philippines, we remain committed to strengthening networks, advocating for safe and inclusive workplaces, and ensuring that women are given equal opportunities to lead and excel within the maritime sector.”
She further highlighted that partnerships among maritime institutions, industry stakeholders, and professional organizations are essential to building a more inclusive maritime community.
Through continued collaboration, WIMA Asia and its partners aim to expand opportunities for women in maritime, encourage leadership development, and support initiatives that foster equality and empowerment across the industry.
