WOMEN'S MONTH CELEBRATION

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF WIMA-ASIA

It is my great pleasure to be here with you all to celebrate National Women Month 2026, with the theme and the call, WE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Society”, and as we enjoy the empowering spirit of, Lead Like the Babaylans, Filipinas!”.

This year’s celebration is a powerful reflection of WIMA Asia’s unwavering dedication to empowering women, enhancing leadership skills, and promoting significant regional collaboration in the maritime industry. As a group that brings together Asian women in the maritime sector, we understand that advancement is best attained when we collaborate, create networks, and encourage one another across national boundaries.

The spirit of WE suggests that we have a shared responsibility to support the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those pertaining to inclusive economic development, gender equality, increased employment, and high-quality education. WIMA Asia remains at the forefront of these initiatives that open opportunities to women to engage actively and equally in the maritime sector, both as seafarers, seaport operators, educators, and innovators. By doing this, we help create a maritime sector that is more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable both locally and globally.

The sub-theme, Lead Like the Babaylans, Filipinas!, takes inspiration from our pre-colonial women leaders who served as highly respected and influential figures in their communities. We take inspiration from these women as symbols of strength. Today, we aim to strengthen the roles of women in the maritime sector as we overcome challenges and become leaders who influence policies and community development.

Moving forward, we should once again commit to capacity-building, mentorship, and collaboration, with the aim of making sure that all women in maritime should not just be given the opportunity to engage, but be made to succeed and lead. We should go on to create inclusive environments that embrace various voices and listen, respect, and value them.

As a single regional community, we can become the force of the power of “WE” to promote gender equality, enhance solidarity, and make a transformative change in the maritime sector. Following the spirit of the Babaylans, can we still encourage progress and create a future where every woman is at the forefront of progress.
